Why are some carbons naed as alpha carbons and beta carbons?

The alpha carbon is the carbon attached to a functional group; the beta carbon is the next one out; the gamma carbon is the next one after that, and so on. The furthest carbon atom from the functional group is called the omega carbon. For example, linolenic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid containing three C=C bonds.
