They break down the materials or products made from natural materials (paper) as they have some peculiar enzymes for this process. But as enzymes are specific in their action, these cannot break down many man-made materials likes plastic. These can be acted upon by physical processes but not by biological processes. Therefore, these types of substances persist for long time and cannot be decomposed into simpler substances.
