Substances which can be acted upon by microorganism (decomposer) are called biodegradable. For example- vegetable wastes, paper, cotton etc.
On the other hand, materials which are not acted upon by decomposers are called non-biodegradable. For example- plastic, glass, polyethene etc.

Reason for substances to be biodegradable is being organic that can be used up by scavengers of the environment. The reason for substances to be non biodegradable is that they are synthetic and can’t be decomposed by the microorganisms
