Why are sound waves called as longitudinal waves?

hey....sound waves called longitudinal because particles of the medium through which... the sound is transported vibrate parallel to the direction that the sound wave moves......

Hi friend...

Sound waves are longitudinal waves because they travel in the direction perpendicular to the direction of propagation. Sound waves form compressions and rarefactions. They can travel through solid, liquid and gas.
This is why we call sound waves as longitudinal waves.
