Answer:

sound waves are called mechanical waves because they needs a material medium for propagation, like liquid like water, air or metals like silver. The other type of waves called electromagnetic waves(like light) do not need a medium to travel, and can even go through vaccum.

Disturbance that moves through a medium is called mechanical wave. As sound waves also need medium to propagate that's why these waves are called mechanical waves.

I hope this will help you out ☺️ ☺️

Explanation:

When objects vibrate, it collides with the molecules in the medium. This collision produces mechanical oscillations in the medium. Because of this, sound waves are known as mechanical waves. Also, Sound waves are called mechanical waves because they need a medium to travel through. Electromagnetic waves can travel through space(without medium), whereas sound waves cannot. Sound waves always do need a medium, the medium can be different like air, water, metal(solid), but the presence of medium is a must for sound waves thats why they are called mechanical waves. hope its help:)))))))
