=) Soundwaves are called mechanical waves because sound waves are longitudinal waves .

=) longitudinal waves require medium to travel from one way to other.

sound waves are in form of creast or trough.

That's why it is called mechanical waves.

Sound waves are called mechanical waves because they need material medium to travel.It needs a medium I.e. solid ,liquid or gas to travel.they cant travel with medium.
______________________________________________________________we cant hear our voice or any sound in space because there is no atmosphere or particles that lead to hear us the sound .

Also we cant hear the sound in vacuum because sound cant travel in vacuum. it needs a medium.
