Why are sound waves called mechanical waves ? Why is a loud sound heard at resonance

Sound waves are also called as Mechanical waves. As there is tranfer of energy from potential energy to kinetic energy during vibfation.
When the external periodic force applied is same as the natural frequency of the substance..then resonance takes place.thus a loud sound is heard.
