the south west monsoon when enters india ,due to its tapering topography bifurcates into two branches :the arabian sea branch and the bay of bengal branch.so the arabian sea branch flows through the arabian sea and enters india from the west and brings rainfall to the central part of india.the bay of bengal branch flows through the bay of bengal and hits the arrakan yoma in myanmar and deflects to reach india from the east.and then meets the arabian sea branch,giving rain to central india.hence it does not affect the area south east where tamil nadu is located.

Chennai falls in the rain shadow region of Eastern Ghats (i.e., at Coromandel Coast). Due to this, it receives scanty rain as compared to the southwest monsoon winds of the Konkan Coast on the Western Ghats.
