spongin fibres and calcareous or siliceous spicules of the sponges are derived from spongioblast cell and scleroblast cells which are mesenchymal in origin....they help to maintain the structural organisation of sponge body as well as they provide support and protection from predators and various mechanical injuries to the sponge....
