it is connected to the live wires so that when it is switched off the socket/ appliances are not live. the neutral wire system is grounded so the neutral wire provide the return path of the circuit current and close the circuit and ground wire protect the equipment from any damages.

If the switch were in the neutral line, the appliance would still be hot when the switch is turned off. By switching the hot wire, you make it safe to work on the appliance when it is switched off. Otherwise, you could get a shock by working on it with the switch off.
