A “synthetic polymer” refers to a long chain molecule that was synthesized, as opposed to being found in nature. They are made of many things. Most polymers have a carbon backbone, so we usually have carbon as a key element. Then, the other elements involved depend on the polymer that is being formed. So it is very difficult to answer the question regarding “what are they made of?”.

The advantages are that synthetic chemists can design polymers that have very specific properties to achieve specific goals.
