The rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Indus river and their tributaries which have water flow throughout the year are flowing through the northern regions. The flow of these rivers bring an enormous amount of slit depositions over the surfaces of this region and this is called as alluvium soil.

The alluvium soil is the most fertile soil which is finely grained that are deposited along the river beds. It is rich in nutrients and minerals and good crop soil. Thus the northern plain regions consisting of this type of soil is a surplus producer of food grains like wheat, etc. Hence the northern plain is called the food bowl of India.
