Brazil is a country in the eastern part of South America that has the Atlantic ocean bordering it on the eastern side. The Amazon basin and the Tocantins-Araguaia basins are one of the biggest river ecosystems in the world that are present in Brazil.

There are 7 major rivers in Brazil and 5 coastal minor river basins. All these rivers and river basins mostly flow towards the eastern side. They arise from the Andes mountains on the western side of South America and flow towards the east to meet the Atlantic ocean.

Therefore, all the rivers in Brazil flow only towards the east into the Atlantic ocean as the Andes are present on the Western side.

Coastal rivers in Brazil:

  • Andes Mountain range about 8500 kilometers in South America which starts from Venezuela to its tip and which is why they are a second-longest mountain range in the world after the Himalayas in India.
  • The presence of this range leaves a little passage for rivers to flow.
  • Maule river which is in existence since from the colonial era when Portuguese ruled Brazil, flows in a staggered way between Andes Mountains.
