Why are the dams made stronger and thicker at the bottom than at the top ?​

You can see from the diagram that the dam is much thicker at the bottom than it is at the top. This is because the pressure of the water is much greater deeper down and the dam needs to be thick at the bottom so that it is strong enough to withstand this larger pressure

As we go to the bottom of the dam pressure will increases. So, to withstand this pressure walls are thicker at the bottom. ... As we move upwards, the pressure goes on decreasing: so the thickness of wall is made smaller and smaller. That is why the walls of dam are made thick at the bottom .
