Torque = r × F = rF sinthetha
As the r or perpendicular distance of the force we apply on handles from the hinge increases, the Torque also increases. This helps to open/close the door with using less force.

So, to open the door in the right direction. If it was in the left located on the hing side they would be difficult to open and this making uncomfortable for the person. That is why the hinges are nailed on left and the lock and latch on the right and vice versa.
