The elements in group 1 of periodic table are called alkali metals because their reaction with water forms alkalies (i.e. strong bases capable of neutralizing acids ).

When liquid, uranium ( at m.p. ) is a chemical element with the symbol U and atomic number 92. It is a silver grey metal in the actinides series of the periodic table. A uranium atom has 92 protons and 92 electrons , of which 6 are valence electrons.

Answer:

The elements of group 1 are called alkali metals because their oxides and hydroxides form alkaline solutions on treating with water. Therefore, the solution becomes basic or alkaline due to the formation of hyroxide ions.
