Bean and peas are leguminous plants. Their roots have nitrogen fixing bacteria in them. These are mainly cyanobacter (blue-green algae), azatobacter, anabaena. These bacteria convert the nitrogen in the atmosphere into a form that can be directly utilised by plants. This process is called nitrogen-fixation. Thus, by growing legumes, the soil which is deficient in nitrogen can be replenished with nitrogen and can be made fertile.
