why are the gaps left between rails while laying a railway track

Metal expands on heating. So to prevent any damages to railway track, or Train itself cracks are left between tracks. Cracks give space for tracks to expand safely.

so that due to the heat produced from the high velocity train can't effect the movement of train even when the iron of the track expend due to heat
