Assam receives abundance of rainfall and the problem of seasonal harsh floods make it essential and economical for some houses in particular areas to have houses built in stilts…or houses built in raised platforms with pillars.

The main reason being relief from flood waters that may enter the house if it's in the ground level. The raised structure prevents water from entering the house and thereby saving the loss of property.

It also helps in the prevention of growth of vegetation or spread of mucus inside the house from the murky wet area. Altogether the space below the stilt can be used as a storehouse or as a working area with shade or for keeping the livestock.
