Why are the interconversions of the states of matter considered a physical change?
Answers
The interconversion of the states of matter is a physical change due to the following reasons: 1. The change is reversible. A substance can revert back to its original state by physical means. 2. No new chemical substance is formed. The chemical identity of the substance remains the same in the different states. Ice,water and water vapour are chemically H2O although they are present as solid, liquid and gaseous states respectively. 3. There is no change in the chemical properties of the substance.

The process of changing matter from one state to another is called interconversion of states of matter. The interconversion between different states of matter can be brought about by changing the.conditions of temperature and pressure
(i)By changing temperature: By increasing the temperature solids can be converted to liquids and.liquids into gases. This occurs because on increasing the temperature the kinetic energy of particles :
increases and they can move freely. On decreasing the temperature (or cooling), reverse changes take place
For example, ice changes into liquid water at 0°C and water into steam at 100°C (at I atm.
pressure).
(ii) On increasing the pressure, the particles of matter are brought closer. Thus on increasing pressure,
gases can be liquefied.
