(i) Means of transportation and communication are called lifelines of nation and its economy because   (a) An efficient and well developed system of transport is essential for the utilization of the natural resources.   (b) They are the very basis of industries and trade of country.    (c) Just as the arteries supply blood to different organs of the body, a well developed system of transport maintains the movement of persons and products from one region to another region of the country.   (d) Means of communication help in sending and receiving messages and play an important role in creasing awareness among the people at national level. These help in defending the independence and the national unity of a country.   (ii) International trade has undergone major changes during the last 15 years. Exchange of commodities and goods is being augmented and superseded by exchange of information and knowledge. India has emerged as a software giant at the international level and is earning a large amount of foreign exchange through the export of information technology products.
