This is because a convex mirror forms a highly-diminished image, thus making the traffic look much smaller. As a result, we can see a large number of vehicles in a very small mirror.

Convex mirror is utilized in a car for rear view mirror primary purpose for this is because it has a wider view range than a plane mirror. And it can also create an erect virtual and diminished whole image of an object. A convex mirror gives light as it bounces the light, and the remote away a point is from the core, the more the light is curved. As a result, an image developed in a convex mirror is tinier than an image in a plane (flat) mirror.
