"The legend of the North-land" had been written by Phiebe Cary. Here it was stated that winter nights were extremely chilly and cold. This was the reason why people used to be quite unable to sleep during winter nights here. In Northland, people used to move from one place to another by using sledges.
This has been described in this poem.
The winter nights were even extremely long. The poem talked about St. Peter's journey and how he happened to stop in to a house where he asked for some food (a cake) from from a woman, as he was extremely hungry.
