Why are the poles used for telephone wires made hollow?

we know that when a substance is heated it expands and when it cools it contracts ... in the same way the telephone wires are kept tight in summers to cope with expansion with rise in temperature and kept loose in winters to cope with contraction. if we'll not do so then the wires would break off
