cephalic means to have head . since ribs are headed on both ends they are called BICEPHALIC (bi= 2). i.e. they have two articulating( points where two bones meet) ends. Ribs are dorsally connected to the thoracic vertebrae and ventrally to the sternum.

The first seven pairs are attached directly to the sternum i.e. the breastbone by costal cartilages and are called true ribs.
