Western coast is a continuous range and it is also very narrow as compared to eastern coast , therefore the rivers of there are very short. This makes the entire rainfall occuring at Western side of Western ghats to drain towards Arabian sea. Hence, the rivers of Western coast are very short.

The reason behind this situation are as follows:

The slope between eastern margin of western ghats (Sahyadri) and eastern ghats is declining towards when we come across from western to eastern side. So, all the big rivers (i.e Mahanadi , Godavari, krishna, cauvery, and their tributaries) flown from West to East.Western ghats are continuous, long , rigid series of mountains, but eastern ghats are dissected, so river can easily pass through it, make their delta's ,mouths, etc.Western coastal plain is less broader than the eastern coastal plain, because western coast is submerged, and eastern coast is emerged.People of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala (Kerala have large coastal plain), have less broader plain of 5–20 km at western margin of western ghats or India, on the other hand people of West Bengal, orrisa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil nadu have broader plain of 100–120 km make by great river enlisted in point 1.Releif of western ghats are higher than eastern ghats, also rivers of western margin of western ghats are rain fed, they flow fastly and drain in Arabian sea without making any delta (theses rivers make estuaries) due to less space between western margin of western ghats and Arabian sea. Thanks
