The sun is closest to the equator and therefore the equator gets direct sunlight from the rays of the sun which raises the temperature very high on the equator. EXPLANATION: Since the earth is inclined on its axis the 'Northern and Southern Hemispheres' of Earth are either tilted 'towards or away' from the Sun.

Why is it hotter at the equator than it is at the poles? ... Because the sun's rays hit the earth's surface at a higher angle at the equator.
