Smelting is the most commonly used reduction process where carbon is used. Hydrogen is used in petroleum refining to remove some contaminates like sulphur. Hence they have a big importance in the metallurgical industries.

Terminology:

Smelting : Reduction of metal oxide with the help of coke ( carbon ) at temperature above it's melting point

Smelting Example:

PbO + C → Pb + CO↑

Petroleum Refining : The process of obtaining the usable products  of petroleum.

Reduction: Addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen.
