All auditoriums are designed this way (a theatre is a type of auditorium). The walls are hung with fabric to help absorb noise. The ceilings are covered with acoustic tiles to do the same thing. If sounds echoed throughout the room while the movie played no one could hear the dialogue or anything else due to excessive noise
