▪️ Answer ▪️

The rag pickers had come from Dhaka, Bangladesh. However due to storms their fields that gave them their livelihood was swept away as well as their homes. Because of this they neither had a home to stay nor a source of income. That is why these rag pickers had come to Seemapuri scrounging for gold in the big city.

Answer:

Lost Spring is a prose written by Anees Jung which describes the miserable and pathetic conditions of ragpickers of Seemapuri and bangle makers of Firozabad. This story throws light on the life of poverty led by the families and their children which compel them to live a life of imprisonment.

The ragpickers are immigrants from Bangladesh. They came from their homelands back in 1971. They are devoid of basic facilities and necessities like food, electricity and drinking water. They do not have an identity in this country but posess a ration card that enable them to buy grain. For them more than identity, food is the prime focus.

The families left their beautiful land of green fields and rivers just so they could survive. According to them if at the end of the day they could feed their families and go to bed without an aching stomach they would rather stay here than in the field which were destroyed by storms and floods and gave them no grain.

These families are forced to pick rags or work as labourers for a livelihood. Their only means of survival is garbage. To children, garbage is gold. They are wrapped in wonders. Sometimes they find a silver coin or even a ten rupee note. For adults, garbage is their source of survival and their daily bread.

Lost spring gives a vivid description of children condemned to work at an early age in terrible and hazardous conditions. The children of Seemapuri are devoid of their childhood. They have to assist their parents in making a living at an early age and they never enjoy the carefree life of a child.
