Why are the working tables and shelves in chemistry laboratory covered with tiles and not wood or metals?​

So they will damage wood as well as react with metals to form hazardous gases but in case of tiles they are non reactive. So to protect and to keep the working tables and shelves clean, they are covered with tiles.
