Gaps are there between sections of rails on tracks because in summers, when the rails expand due to heat, they have room to expand and thus they do not bend or cracking.

Answer:
There has to gaps between rails section to allow for expansion and contraction of the metal in summer and winter.Earlier there used to be fish plates between two sections but now railway use tapering rail sections which overlap and at the same time allows the expansion/contraction
