Why are there so many roundabouts in europe?

I tend to think that mini roundabouts are overused, probably because they're so cheap. In most instances they are simply white paint on a very slightly raised road surface. They do work up to a point but I think that full-size roundabouts work much better. However, the full-size version requires space, something that's often in short supply in the UK.
