Why are there stars in the sky? And why are some brighter than others?

the stars are nothing but huge balls of gases compessed by gravity. Some are brighter than other because of the distance the ones that are closer are brighter and the ones that are far seem less bright an example is are our sun in the middle for our solar system it is nothing but a huge gas floating in space
