The correct question should be
Why does Tagore call the walls ‘narrow’ in his poem ‘Where The Mind Is Without Fear’?
Answer:
The poet wishes for a united nation. He feels that humans have built numerous walls that divide them into groups. For example many domestic walls exist within the Indian society. These walls push people into water tight compartments. Differences in language, caste, ideology, gender, region and religion work as walls. They ruin the unity of the nation, owing to which progress and growth becomes slow. This narrow mindset of focussing on people’s differences is what made the poet call the walls narrow. The idea of ‘narrow’ here also suggests suffocation and disruption of both peace and growth.
