Most of toothpastes includes sodium fluoride, silica, sodium lauryl phosphate, sorbitol, water etc.It may neutralise the acid formation in mouth cavity as well as at teeth gaps. So tooth paste is basic in nature.

Bacteria present in our mouth produce acids by degradation of sugar and food particles remaining in the mouth after eating food. The acids lower the pH value of the mouth which can cause tooth decay. Therefore toothpaste are basic so that it can neutralise the excess acid and prevent tooth decay.
