Toothpastes are basic in nature because in our mouth there are certain types of acids. when we do brush, so toothpaste contains base, so when it goes to our mouth, it reacts with our mouth acids and form salts, so that's why toothpastes contains base.

The toothpaste are basic in nature because when we wash our mouth , the bacteria are not being washed . So, in this case Saliva reacts with sugar in the foods and forms acid. So, to neutralize Acid , the toothpaste are made basic in nature.
