why are toothpastes basic in nature???

Most of the toothpastes include sodium fluoride, silica,sodium lauryl phosphate,sorbitol,water etc.It may neutralise the acid formation in mouth cavity as well as at teeth gaps.So, toothpaste is basic in nature.
