Why are transverse wave weaker than longitudinal wave?

The direction that the material moves, relative to the direction of wavepropagation, makes the difference. For a longitudinal wave, the liquid molecules move back and forth in the direction of the wave propagation, whereas for a transverse wave this motion is perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
