Viruses are considered on the borderline of living and non living because only when they are inside a living cell do they fulfil the criteria of being regarded asliving entities. Outside, they act as non living entities.

It is a dead and inactive while floating in air or in contact with non-living object.
But in a living system, it is able to exchange it's DNA it's active, living.
