why are viruses considered as the borderline between living and non-living things ?

Viruses are unique as they exhibit the features of both living and non-living things.When they are floating in the air or settled on a door knob , they are non-living like salt and sugar . In fact they can be crystallized and stored in jars for years.But when they come in contact with a suitable plant or animal , they infect their cells and quickly multiply inside it.Thus they are considered on the borderline between living and non - living things.

When viruses are outside the host, they are non living, that is, they are present only as protein coats, sometimes with a membrane.

When in the host, they become active and exist in various forms. They become alive and depend on the host for their survival.

Hence viruses considered as border line between living and non-living things
