Why are viruses considered at the borderline between living and non living things?

Viruses are considered on the borderline of living and non living because only when they are inside a living cell do they fulfil the criteria of being regarded as living entities. Outside, they act as non living entities.

Viruses are the types of microorganisms.

They become active only when the get a living surface. Outside the living body they are totally inactive and act as non - living things.

Because of this they are considered on the boderline of living and non living bodies.
