Viruses are described as particles rather than cells because:
1. They do not have any independent life.
2. Viruses do not have any metabolic capacity unlike any bacteria or other phylum.
3. Viruses do not have the cellular form of organisms. They do not have most of the components of a cell such as ribosome, plasma membrane and other cellular membrane.
4. Viruses have no locomotary capacity and they can stay like particles even in harsh conditions without the presence of any nutrients or harsh conditions of the habitat.
