why are viruses non- living outside the host body

viruses works only inside the body of the cell and they are like host outside of the body

viruses show the characteristics of both living and non living as they are non living when they are in contact with non living but when they come in contact with living they multiple inside them and thus they are known as boderline b/w living and non living
