Viruses are obligate endoparasites, meaning they require a host cell to reproduce. This is because viral particles lack the cellular machinery required to replicate their genetic material and to make viral proteins. Reproduction or replication is the only characteristic of life that a virus exhibits. They do not feed, respire, grow or detect stimuli.
