why are wall of the dam are wide at base

because the water has high pressure at bottom so the base should be strong

The reason is that the pressure exerted by a liquid increases with its depth. Thus,as the depth increases, more and more pressure is exerted by water on the wall of dam. A thicker wall is required to withstand greater pressure, therefore, the thickness of dam increases towards the bottom
