why are walls of hydroelectric dam are made thicker at the base?

The weight and pressure of a liquid are more the deeper you go into the liquid (Increasing height of liquid column). So, since the bottom of the dam is at the bottom of a river, it has to be thicker to be able to withstand the pressure.

in my view the base of the the hydroelectric dam is thicker because to give support to the dam and if the base is not thick than the dam cannot hold the pressure of water .
2nd reason of it should be to give height to the dam.
