The same reason why we are afraid of serial killers and rapists. They are very unpredictable and have no morals or sympathy where as you know how you're fellow civilized humans think and act. Wild animals are also very strong and robust so you have a right to be afraid of them because most wild animals that humans are afraid of can kill you and without hesitation.
