Because, a wall is an opaque object. And light can not travel through opaque objects, so the light that reflects off our eyes and hits the wall, doesn't penetrate it, making us unable to see through it. However, sound waves can travel through opaque solids, in fact, sound waves travel the fastest through a solid medium, hence we can hear the sounds coming from the other side of the wall.
