In order to provide equal representation to the people of weaker sections a special system of reserved constituencies were initiated. Some constituencies are reserved for people belonging to SC and ST. In such constituencies, candidate belonging to this category can only stand for election. On the basis of this reserved constituency system 84 seats are reserved for the SCs and 47 seats are reserved for the ST community. This number of reserved seats are in proportion to their share in the total population. Such reserved system does not encroach upon the legitimate share of any other social group.
